About a month ago, there were speculations that Google and Verizon have joined hands to make a tablet PC which will run on Android. These reports have recently been confirmed by Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam. In his interview to the Wall street journal he sounded very positive and motivated to release this product. However, he did not specify an approximate release date, which is still a mystery!
Google logoAfter the iPad launch, technology enthusiasts are waiting for something new, a device which will test the buyer’s fondness for Apple products. Apple sold more than one million iPad devices in less than a month of its launch and this is a clear indicator of market trends in the years to come. Tablet PCs are surely much in demand and Apple has the first mover advantage. However, history has proved that in the world of technology, one has to keep reinventing their products to survive in the highly competitive market of computer devices.
Verizon LogoGoogle and Verizon’s partnership might well be path breaking as there are many features that this new device will offer. McAdam, in his interview, did not clarify whether the tablet would run on Android, Chrome OS or just Google applications running on some other technology. With Android, Google has made it clear that it will be a future world player in the world of mobile operating systems. The Android platform is designed to be scalable upwards to MIDs and notebooks and downwards to feature phones However, leading technology experts are expecting that the device will run on Chrome OS. If that’s the case, the tablet will have a great advantage over the iPad. Firstly, the iPad does not have a folder structure to store its files. This makes storage of data difficult. Chrome OS will give the user a PC like experience which is much desired. The device can have other features such as USB ports which are found in common PCs. It will also support cloud computing and a user will be able to access files from any place.
One difficulty with Google is that they haven’t yet been able to launch a successful product. Many telecom analysts feel that this is the main reason behind partnering with Verizon. This does make perfect business for Google, a market leader in the field of technology. However, they will face stiff competition from Apple and the likes of HP, Dell and Asus who have been rumored to be coming out with their versions of tablet PCs. Many of them showed off prototype tablets at CES this year but there is not much information about the type of products they are cooking up!
With this partnership, Google has posed a challenge to many of its successful competitors. This was very much expected following the report by The New York Times last month, in which they speculated that Google was planning to introduce a tablet PC, something on the lines of the iPad. Verizon, by itself, is a world class company and if everything goes well, this tablet PC may be the next big thing!

Electronic security for homes is fast catching up in India. With either the elderly or kids alone at home while you are away at work, it is essential for you to have proper surveillance system in place at home. A variety of security systems are available right from simple intrusion detector panels to intelligent remote monitoring systems. These include intruder alarm systems, auto dialers, doorphones, electronic looks, remote panic alarms and video surveillance systems.
Security systems can also be integrated with home automation features. Various residential builders are already offering home automation and security together as an add-on feature for their clients. If you are planning to install, you can choose between wired and wireless security systems. Both types can be further divided into user friendly and high end programmable systems. Here’s the way to go for an ideal security system for your home.
DESIGN FOR COST (DFC)
Most designers feel that the cost of a product depends on selecting low cost parts. This is a misconception. The cost of the part is, possibly, just one aspect, especially at the start of the design. Usually by the time a product gets to the assembly line, the cost structure of the product changes due to various factors.
DESIGN FOR ASSEMBLY (DFA)
Design for assembly is a major area that can make or mar a product. Designer should therefore pay particular attention to this area. This area also has impact on the cost of the product and its support in the field. Design for assembly is necessary for designing of electronic and mechanical products, cable harness and software. Some aspects of designing for assembly and its impact.
DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING (DFM)
Most designers don’t realise the importance of this key phase that leads to unexpected escalation in the cost of the product. Some of the important manufacturing aspects are listed. Another important aspects of designing for manufacture is that it is interlinked with other DFx elements, leading to complex situations where any DFM solution needs to be validated with the other DFx elements.
When searching for something, you probably want to find it quickly without spending a lot of effort wading through extraneous items. Windows 7 makes search results more relevant and easier to understand. The search engine uses an improved algorithm to determine relevance and rank results. Within your search results, words from the search query appear highlighted within snippets of file content, file names, file paths, and tags so you can easily see why they were included in your results.
It’s also simpler to specify where you want to search, whether it is in a specific folder on a hard disk drive or in a Library. Searches initiated from the Start menu look at all the data in your Libraries, while searches conducted from Windows Explorer look within the particular folder or Library that you’re already browsing.
In addition, the Query Builder feature—found in the Search box in Windows Explorer—helps you search smarter by presenting dynamic filter suggestions that help you narrow your results. The Query Builder uses the properties and meta data of your documents to help you refine your search results. For example, you can refine a search in your Documents Library by date modified or document type you are looking for. The Search box also shows you a list of your recent searches in case you want to run them again.
Google has revealed that its latest Chrome beta is the fastest yet, upping browsing speeds by at least 30 per cent.
Google has been doing using both the V8 and SunSpider benchmarks to test Chrome’s speed and is claiming that it has managed a 30% and 35% speed increase.
This is impressive in itself, but this also means that since the first release of Chrome, the browser’s speed has increased by as much as 305%.
Browser sync
Other new features released in the update of Chrome include integration of the Adobe Flash plug-in and some HTML5 shenanigans – including Geolocation APIs, App Cache, web sockets, and file drag-and-drop capabilities.
Another improvement is the addition of browser preference synchronisation. Essentially, now you can sync themes, start-up settings and homepage preferences. This is an extension of the bookmark synchronisation released earlier this year.
New figures from NetApplications show that, in April, Chrome’s browser share was up to 6.73 per cent, which is a rise of 2.4 per cent year on year.
To download the new Chrome beta, which is available for Mac, Windows and Linux, go to www.google.com/intl/en/landing/chrome/beta.
In home security systems there is Cameras, Electronic locks, panic switches and PIR lights other than intrusion alarm systems. Let we see them in detail.
1. Cameras: A wide variety of cameras are available for home security. Your home can have a single camera at the front door or many cameras placed throughout the house. The multiple cameras can be attached to motion detectors and activated only when there is movement in a certain area. These can also be attached to VCRs or computers for additional monitoring and recording. If attached to a computer, you can check a status of the home from anywhere over the internet connection.
If the camera will be used outdoors it should have a casing that is durable enough to withstand the weather. If you fear vandalism an extra durable casing is needed. A CCTV will let you view the entrance and other strategic areas around your home.
2. Electronic/electromagnetic locks: Window and door lock system can be added onto your home’s existing locks, creating a double lock at each point of entry.
3. Panic switches: There are nothing but simple buttons with hooters attached to create an alarming sound of high pitch.
4. PIR lights: These lights activate automatically when there is an activity in the area of focus.
Adobe on Friday announced that their flagship production and design software collection, Creative Suite 5, has reached RTM and is now shipping. Adobe has also posted 30-day trial downloads for every application and suite in CS5.
Creative Suite 5 has been touted to include major updates to over 14 of their applications and over 250 new features for the entire suite. See our previous articles to get a quick glance at all the major new features and changes to expect.
Users can either download trials of the different suite editions or choose individually between different applications. Trial downloads require a free Adobe ID registration.
Adobe has posted a comparison table of the various editions, what they include, and how much they will cost:
Home security systems can be centered around an alarm, a system of intercoms, locking systems or video cameras. Determine the needs of your home depending on the surrounding environment.
Intrusion alarm system. Alarms can be either silent or very loud. A loud alarm will either frighten the intruder away or alert the neighbours that someone is trying to invade your house. Alarms fitted into the door sound right at the point of entry. Others can be connected to a central control pad, which sounds if any point of entry is breached.
Generally an intrusion alarm systems has different sensors, magnetic contacts, hooters etc,.. linked to a control panel. An auto dialer with prerecorded message can also be integrated, which will automatically dial the fed numbers and leave emergency message. With this feature, if someone intrudes your home the security systems will call the police directly to inform them.
While selecting a warning alarm system, ensure that,
1. It doesn’t produce false alarm.
2. It has enough battery backup to meet unpredictable power conditions.
3. It is user friendly with minimal and easy controls.
4. If sensors like PIR are used, it must be EMI/RFI protected.
5. Magnetic sensors are easy to align.
6. The sound output is above 105dB at 1 metre.
